HC Deb 09 December 1935 vol 307 cc569-70W
Mr. DAY

asked the Minister of Labour whether he can state the number of persons registered at the Walworth Road, Borough of Southwark, Employment Exchange during the 12 months ended to the last convenient date; the number during this period authorised for transitional benefit; and the number that came under the means test during that period?

Mr. E. BROWN

Statistics are not available as to the aggregate number of separate individuals who have registered for employment at the Borough (Walworth Road) Employment Exchange, or for whom transitional payments or unemployment allowances have been authorised, during any period of 12 months. The number of unemployed persons on the registers of that Exchange at 21st October, 1935, was 11,372. Of these 2,612 were applying for unemployment allowances, and would be subject to a needs test; and the total included 116 persons whose needs were held not to justify the payment of allowances.
