HC Deb 02 November 1934 vol 293 cc522-4W
Mr. JANNER

asked the Minister of Transport particulars of the proposed road work which is to be undertaken in the borough of Stepney, and what is the probable date of the commencement of the work; and whether preference will be given to local men in respect thereof?

Mr. H0RE-BELISHA

Grants have been promised from the Road Fund towards the reconstruction (at a total estimated cost of approximately £100,006) of the Wapping entrance, New Gravel Lane and Glamis Road bridges, and towards the cost of widening Cable Street, Wapping Wall and Three Colt Street. I cannot say how soon the responsible local authorities will commence work on these schemes, but I see no reason for any considerable delay. I have asked the local authorities to arrange, as far as possible, to recruit labour for grant-aided works from the local Employment Exchanges.
