HC Deb 12 March 1934 vol 287 c38W
Mr. GIBSON

asked the Secretary of State for India if he is aware that the Indian Government proposes to abolish the export duty of 5 per cent. on all raw cowhides, and will His Majesty's Government recommend the Indian Government to remove the duty only on those hides exported to any place within the Empire, and retain a duty on hides to any country outside the Empire, in order to assist tanners in this country?

Sir S. HOARE

The object of the Government of India in removing the export duty on hides is to help the Indian export trade. The United Kingdom takes so small a part of the Indian exports of raw hides, that I fear the course desired by the hon. Member is not likely to be acceptable.
