HC Deb 11 April 1934 vol 288 cc322-3W
Mr. LAWSON

asked the Minister of Labour the present cost of unemployment benefit for each 100,000 on the register?

Sir H. BETTERTON

For each 100,000 on the live register the cost of benefit and transitional payments averages at present about £4,000,000 per annum, of which £1,800,000 represents benefit. There is also a loss of contribution income of about £500,000 for each 100,000 on the register. The distribution of the expenditure as between benefit and transitional payments will, of course, be materially affected when the provisions of the Unemployment Bill become law.
