HL Deb 11 April 1934 vol 91 c538WA
THE EARL OF COTTENHAM

asked His Majesty's Government what progress has been made in the preparation. of the cinema films which it is proposed to produce as propaganda on the subject of road safety; whether the actors who are to take part in the scenes to be depicted have been selected, and whether care is being taken to ensure that the persons chosen to enact the parts of drivers of vehicles are those whose names and records as private motorists are such that in the public estimation their conduct on the road is worthy of being copied?

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (THE EARL OF PLYMOUTH)

Cinema films dealing with road safety were released on the 29th March by the following companies:—British Gaumont, British Paramount, Pathé Freres, British Movietone News, British Pictorial Productions, Ltd. Further films on the subject will, I hope, be shown in the near future. The Minister of Transport has already approached a limited number of persons well-known to the public as drivers of experience and skill, with a view to their participation in the preparation of films illustrating faults commonly found on the roads and the manner in which they can be avoided. The suggestion met with a favourable response and the services of some of these gentlemen are being utilised.

House adjourned at twenty-five minutes before eight o'clock.
