HC Deb 07 November 1933 vol 281 c37W
Dr. O'DONOVAN

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if regulations exist governing the wages of native labour in the mines and industry of Northern Rhodesia?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

By an Ordinance passed in December, 1932, the Governor in Council is empowered to prescribe a minimum wage for any occupation in any district or part of a district in which he is satisfied that the wages are unreasonably low. So far as I am aware, no such minimum wages have been fixed. I may add that comprehensive regulations dealing with the conditions of natives on the mines (which include provision for rations, housing and medical attendance) were made by the Governor in Council on 3rd February, 1931, under the Employment of Natives Ordinance, 1929.
