§ Mr. R. T. EVANSasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education the numbers of graduates who have passed their professional examinations in the training departments of each of the university colleges of England and Wales during the last five years; the aggregate of the grants paid to them; and the number known to the Board to be present without teaching appointments?
§ Mr. RAMSBOTHAMMy Noble Friend regrets that owing to the time and labour which would be involved in abstracting the necessary particulars, he cannot give the precise information asked for in the question. The total number of graduates who completed courses of professional training under the Regulations for the Training of Teachers at the Training Departments of English and Welsh Universities and University Colleges during the last five years was:
At English University and University College Training Departments 6,797 At Welsh University Training Departments 1,560 (This includes failures in the professional examination, most of which have subsequently been retrieved.)
The average annual grant paid in respect of students at these Training Departments during the last five years was 1436W about £366,000. This includes expenditure on courses other than those for graduation followed by a year of professional training. The returns furnished by the Departments in December last indicated that of the students (graduates and others) who had left in July, 1931, the number who were known to have failed to obtain teaching employment by that date was in England 78, and in Wales 47. Of those who left in July, 1932, the numbers were: for England 256, and for Wales 142. The Board have no information regarding the number of students who left in previous years and may now be without teaching appointments.
