HC Deb 20 July 1933 vol 46 c132W
Mr. Pawsey

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether consultations are taking place with trade organisations about the outbreak of Newcastle disease; and if he will list the organisations concerned.

Mrs. Fenner

No outbreaks of Newcastle disease have been reported either in this country or in Europe for some years. However, paramyxovirus exists in racing pigeons both in neighbouring countries and in Cornwall. Discussions have been held with the Royal Pigeon Racing Association and close contact is maintained with them. A further meeting with the RPRA has been arranged.

Mr. Pawsey

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what measures have been taken by veterinarians against Newcastle disease; how the disease was diagnosed; where the requisite tests were carried out; and what steps are being taken to track the source of the outbreak of Newcastle disease.

Mrs. Fenner

There have been no reports of outbreaks of Newcastle disease. Movement restrictions are imposed where paramyxovirus is suspected in this country. In addition, movement restrictions have been applied to Cornwall as a whole because a number of cases have been confirmed in that county.

The disease has been diagnosed on a clinical basis and by laboratory tests at the central veterinary laboratory. Investigations into the disease both as to its source and on other aspects are being undertaken in accordance with established animal health practice.
