HC Deb 19 October 1932 vol 269 cc150-2W
Mr. GROVES

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether the divers and others engaged on salvage work on M 2 have been given a bonus and special leave in recognition of the arduous nature of the work; and, if so, what was the amount of bonus and period of leave?

Sir B. EYRES MONSELL

Leave has been given to the divers and others engaged on salvage work on "M 2" whenever the weather conditions have interfered with the work and the question of special leave will be considered at the conclusion of the operation. Divers are paid extra pay while diving at rates between 4s. and 8s. an hour.

Mr. GROVES

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what is the present position respecting the recovery of the "M 2"; and why cables of insufficient strength were used in endeavouring to raise the vessel?

Sir B. EYRES MONSELL

Work is proceeding as weather permits, and it is hoped if the weather is suitable to make another attempt to raise the vessel in November. The cables used were of sufficient strength; the wires used carried away due to chafe caused by bad weather.
