HC Deb 09 March 1932 vol 262 cc1811-2W
Sir F. HALL

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he is now in a position to state the result of the experiments that have been made with regard to warships constructed on the lines of the German battleship "Deutschland"; and whether it is now possible to construct a warship on the lines of the "Deutschland" in such a manner as to reduce the weight of the machinery to 440 tons, thereby reducing the total weight of machinery and accessory plant in a 10,000-ton ship by over 1,500 tons?

Lord STANLEY

Results of the experiments in question are not yet available, but 440 tons do not represent the full weight of the complete propelling installation of the "Deutschland," which has recently been given in a German publication as approximately 49 lbs. per horse power. This is heavier than the steam installation of similar horse power required to drive a ship built on the lines of the "Deutschland" at the same speed.
