§ Mr. HALL-CAINEasked the Home Secretary whether the attention of the police has been called to some of the newspaper competitions now in progress in which the element of chance is the greatest factor; whether he is aware that in one such competition the odds against arriving at a correct solution were 30,421,755 to 1 against; and whether he will consider treating such competitions on the same plane as sweepstakes?
§ Sir H. SAMUELI do not know to what particular competitions the hon. Member alludes, and I should be glad to receive any information which the hon. Member has in his possession. Proceedings have been taken on occasion in the case of newspaper competitions which appeared to contravene the law; but the question whether such competitions are or are not illegal is not for me but for the Courts to decide on the facts of the particular case.
