Major THOMASasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what steps have been taken to find employment for those persons who have lost their employment as a result of the decision to suspend land valuation?
§ Major ELLIOTThe majority of the men whose engagements with the Inland Revenue have been terminated by reason of the decision to suspend Land Valuation were professionally qualified for valuation work. Their engagement with the Inland Revenue was of a strictly temporary character, and, much as I regret the position of the men concerned, my hon. and gallant Friend will appreciate that in the absence of alternative Government work suitable to their qualifications, it was not possible to offer them further Government employment.
