asked the First Lord of the Admiralty the number and ages of the lower-deck ratings who appeared be- fore the last annual selections boards for the commissioned rank of mate (E), and the number selected?

32 candidates appeared before the last Fleet Selection Boards for consideration for promotion to the rank of mate (E). Their ages on 1st July, 1931, were:

  • 2 between the age of 23 and 24.
  • 10 between the age of 24 and 25.
  • 7 between the age of 25 and 26.
  • 4 between the age of 26 and 27.
  • 3 between the age of 27 and 28.
  • 5 between the age of 28 and 29.
  • 1 between the age of 30 and 31.

Four candidates were finally selected as acting mates (E), to date 1st July, 1931. Their ages were approximately 24¼, 25¼, 25½ and 28¼ years.
