HC Deb 24 November 1931 vol 260 cc231-2W
Mr. LLEWELLYN-JONES

asked the Minister of Health whether he has considered the communication from a conference of local authorities in North Wales calling attention to the depression in the slate industry, and urging the desirability of making it a condition of all housing grants that all materials used in connection with housing schemes should, as far as practicable, be of United Kingdom origin; and whether he can see his way to give effect to the policy suggested in the communication?

Sir H. YOUNG

I have received the communication to which my hon. Friend refers. A circular has been issued to local authorities urging them to make the fullest use possible of British goods and, as my hon. Friend is aware, a national campaign to this end has been inaugurated. Special legislation would be necessary to give effect to my hon. Friend's proposal as to the imposition of a condition.
