HC Deb 12 November 1931 vol 259 cc274-5W
Major CARVER

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he can give statistics of the growth of the canning industry in this country?

Sir J. GILMOUR

The recent progress of the fruit and vegetable canning industry in this country is shown in the following figures:

Year. No. of Firms. No. of Factories Estimated Approximate Output.
cwt.
1928 23 27 119,000
1929 26 29 260,000
1930 29 33 574,000
1931 49 56

No estimate is yet available of the output in 1931, but it is known that the 1930 figures will be greatly exceeded. The National Mark was first applied to canned home-grown fruit and vegetables in 1930. I have no information regarding the output of other kinds of canned produce.
