HC Deb 04 May 1931 vol 252 cc43-4W
Sir C. COBB

asked the President of the Board of Education what additional amount of grant from the Treasury has been made, or is due, in respect of council school buildings as a result of Circular 1404 since its issue in September, 1929?

Mr. LEES-SMITH

The additional amount of grant paid to local education authorities in respect of their capital expenditure on maintained public elementary schools under the Board's Circular 1404 was approximately£50,000 in the financial year 1929–30, and£170,000 in the financial year 1930–31. As regards the future, an estimate of the additional grant due to be paid on the amount already approved by the Board would necessarily be an approximation owing to the varying rates and periods at which loans are raised and other circumstances. Assuming that the proposals already sanctioned were completely carried out as approved, the additional annual amount of grant in prospect might be estimated at£275,000.
