HC Deb 12 March 1931 vol 249 cc1399-400W
Mr. McSHANE

asked the Minister of Labour (1) the number of vacancies notified by all the Birmingham Employment Exchanges to Walsall during the four weeks in February; and how many of these were for domestic service;

(2) how many vacancies for women were notified by the Walsall Employment Exchange to any or all of the Birmingham Exchanges during the four weeks in February; and how many of these were for domestic service;

(3) whether she is aware that, although over 18,000 women are registered as unemployed at the Birmingham Exchanges, unemployed women in Walsall are still being offered living-in situations in domestic service in Birmingham; and whether she will issue instructions limiting these situations to Birmingham women who desire them?

Miss BONDFIELD

Where vacancies in Birmingham cannot be quickly filled by local applicants they are circulated in a printed list to other Exchanges in the Midlands, including Walsall. During February, 148 vacancies in Birmingham for women, including 45 in domestic service, were circulated in this way, while seven, all in domestic service, were simi- larly circulated on behalf of Walsall. During the same period, 21 applicants from Walsall were placed in Birmingham, including four in domestic service. One of these four was in resident private domestic service.
