§ Mr. WALKERasked the Minister of Transport what progress has been made in the substitution of steel for wood in the construction of railway coaches; how many persons have been killed or injured in railway accidents during the last year for which figures are available; and in how many of these accidents were steel coaches involved?
§ Mr. HERBERT MORRISONI understand that modern railway coaches are constructed mainly of steel, and that a certain number of coaches consisting almost entirely of steel have been built by the railway companies for trial purposes. My hon. Friend will find particulars of the numbers of persons killed or injured in railway accidents during last year in the preliminary- returns of railway accidents recently issued. I cannot say in how many of these accidents steel coaches were involved.
