§ LORD LLOYDasked His Majesty's Government if they will state the number of riots which took place in India in each year since 1918 and the number of deaths which had resulted in each year.
§ THE UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (LORD SNELL)I regret that my right hon. friend does not at present possess the information for which the noble Lord asks. The Government of India have already been requested to supply the number of casualties in disturbances of all kinds during the years 1925–1930, and will be asked for the additional information which the noble Lord desires, if the figures are readily obtainable. When the Government of India's reply is received I shall communicate with the noble Lord. During 1931 up to June 6 there have been 22 riots in which (including the riots at Cawnpore) 349 persons are known to have lost their lives.
House adjourned at twenty-five minutes past seven o'clock.
