schemes for freeing roads and bridges from tolls have been carried out or are now under consideration since the issue of a circular at the end of February to all highway authorities drawing their attention to the provisions of Section 53 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930; how many such schemes refer to toll roads or bridges in Lancashire; and what is the present position with regard to the toll at Bentham, on the road from Skipton to Lancaster?

No additional schemes for freeing roads and bridges from tolls have come to my notice since the issue of the circular letter referred to. The abolition of the toll at Bentham has been the subject of discussion at various times since 1923, between the local authorities concerned, but no definite proposals have yet been submitted to my Department.
