§ Mr. SHINWELLThe estimated total number of shots fired in coal mines during the year 1929 was about 53,250,000, or an average of 70 per person employed underground. The highest averages occurred in Scotland and Northumberland where, to a substantial extent, it is permissible and customary for miners to fire their own shots.
