asked the First Lord of the Admiralty how many civilians are at present employed in working in naval dockyards; and how many were employed at the same date last year?

Mr. AMMON

The numbers of civilian staff (industrial and non-industrial) employed at the six home dockyards, namely, Portsmouth, Devonport, Chatham, Sheerness, Rosyth and Pembroke Dock, in January, 1930, and at the present time, are 39,787 and 39,349 respectively. The figures given include staff on detached duty, e.g., those engaged on overseeing duties at the works of private firms, &c.
