HC Deb 26 February 1931 vol 248 c2304W
Mr. MILLS

asked the Minister of Labour when the cost-of-living index was last revised; whether she is satisfied that it accurately defines a minimum standard of existence; and whether she contemplates an early revision of the basis of adjusting wages and salaries?

Miss BONDFIELD

The index number remains on its original basis. It is intended to indicate the average increase in the cost of maintaining unchanged the pre-War standard of living of working-class families, and it does not purport to define a minimum standard of existence.
