HC Deb 12 February 1931 vol 248 c624W
Mr. McSHANE

asked the Home Secretary how many appeals to Quarter Sessions have been made from Courts of Summary Jurisdiction during the past year against conviction or sentence, and how many appellants have been successful in their appeals; and how many of those successful have been awarded costs?

Mr. CLYNES

Figures for 1930 are not available. In 1929 there were 232 appeals; 51 resulted in the quashing of convictions and 59 others in the modification of sentences. I have no information as to the number of appellants awarded costs.
