HC Deb 11 February 1931 vol 248 cc420-1W
Mr. MANDER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the terms of the resolution on the nationality of married women adopted by the Council of the League of Nations at its recent sitting; and whether the Government intend to take steps to alter the law in this country in accordance therewith?

Mr. A. HENDERSON

The resolution to which the hon. Member refers provides for placing this question upon the agenda of the next Assembly of the League, and requests the Secretary-General to submit a report, after consultation with various interested organisations. The hon. Member will observe from the full text (given below) that no question of legislation arises out of the resolution, but, as the House has already been informed the Government have this matter under consideration.

The following is the resolution:

"The Council, Decides to place on the agenda of the next session of the Assembly the question of the continued study of the nationality of the wife, and Requests the Secretary-General to submit to the Assembly a report on the question after consultation of the following organisations which have been specially concerned with the nationality of the wife:

  • The International Council of Women.
  • The International Women Suffrage Alliance.
  • The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.
  • The Inter-American Commission of Women.
  • The Equal Rights International.
  • The World Women's Union.
  • The All-Asian Congress of Women.
  • The International Federation of University Women.
  • The Young Women's Christian Association.
The Secretary-General might, if he thinks fit, request the above-named organisations to set up a Committee consisting of two representatives of each organisation with the task of formulating joint proposals to be attached to the report to he submitted to the Assembly.
