asked the Secretary of State for India how many publishers and printers of vernacular and English printed newspapers in India have, since the repromulgation of the Press Ordinance, been required to furnish security, and the number of cases in which the security so deposited has been forfeited?

According to my present information, which covers only the first three weeks after the re-promulgation of the Ordinance, security has been demanded in the following cases:—

United Provinces:

  • From the publisher of one newspaper and from the keeper of the press where it was printed.

Punjab:

  • From the publishers of the papers:—
  • Bande Mataram (Lahore).
  • Akali-te-Pardesi (Amritsar).
  • Comrade (Lahore).
  • Riasti Dunia (Lahore).

From the keepers of the presses:—

  • Bande Mataram Printing Press, (Lahore).
  • Onkar Press (Amritsar).
  • Comrade Press (Lahore).
  • Hindustan Press (Lahore).

I have not been informed of any case of forfeiture.
