(2) what was the average amount paid in rates upon each ton of coal raised in England and Wales for the last period for which the figures are available, and the similar figure for royalties for the same period?

Mr. SHINWELL

During 1930, the average amount per ton of saleable coal raised paid by colliery owners in Durham in local rates for all purposes was 1.41d. and for royalties and wayleaves, including the rental value of freehold minerals where worked by the proprietors, 5.61d. The corresponding figures for England and Wales were 1.11d. and 5.34d., respectively.
