HC Deb 24 April 1931 vol 251 cc1299-300W
Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

asked the Minister of Transport whether his attention has been drawn to the high incidence of accidents on the roads at Trafalgar Square, the Haymarket, Tottenham Court Road, and New Kent Road; what are the principal causes; and what action he proposes to take?

Mr. HERBERT MORRISON

I am aware that the number of accidents in the streets referred to by the hon. Member is regrettably high, but from the information before me I do not think that these streets can be distinguished in this respect from other comparable streets in the Metropolitan area. It has not been possible to classify all the accidents in London according to the streets in which they have occurred, but I have no reason to believe that the principal causes of the accidents in the streets referred to differ materially from those set out in Table V of the Second Report on Street Accidents in Greater London by the London Traffic Advisory Committee which was published in 1929. This report also contains recommendations for increasing the safety of the streets and copies of the report as well as of the recommendations adopted by the Conference on Street Accidents which was convened by me in January of last year have been issued to all the highway authorities concerned.
