HC Deb 15 May 1930 vol 238 c2078W
Colonel ENGLAND

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department if his attention has been called to the fact that imports of British origin into Brazil are steadily losing ground; and if he can state the reasons given by our commercial representatives as to why this is so?

Mr. GILLETT

United Kingdom domestic exports to Brazil increased from £14,400,000 in 1927 to £16,000,000 in 1928, but fell to £13,400,000 in 1929. This decrease was due mainly to a fall in exports of cotton goods, on which the duties on importation into Brazil were increased on 10th April, 1929.
