HC Deb 08 May 1930 vol 238 c1158W
Major GLYN

asked the President of the Board of Trade what is the quantity of foreign and Indian pig-iron that is being imported for the last six months; and how do these figures compare with the same period in 1913–14 and 1920–21?

Mr. W. R. SMITH

The following table shows the total tonnage of pig-iron imported into the United Kingdom and the tonnage consigned from British India registered during the six months ended 31st March, 1914, 1921 and 1930:

Six months ended 31st March.
1914. 1921. 1930.
Tons. Tons. Tons.
Total imports from all countries. 103,504 218,792 110,136
Of which consigned from British India. Nil Nil 41,245

The above figures for 1913–14 and 1920–21 relate to imports into the British Isles as a whole, and those for 1929–30 relate to imports into Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is not possible to give the comparative figures as desired of imports of pig-iron from foreign countries only.
