§ Mr. DAYasked the Secretary of State for Scotland the number of new houses built in Scotland under the various 982W Housing Acts between 1st January, 1921, and the last convenient date; and whether he has any statistics which will show the number of new houses required in Scotland at the present time for the purpose of housing the population?

By Local Authorities (General Schemes) 4,030 By Local Authorities (Slum Clearance Schemes) 11,568* By Assisted Private Enterprise 18,012 By Public Utility Societies 80 The Housing (Financial Provisions) Act, 1924. By Local Authorities 43,931 By Assisted Private Enterprise 1,945 By Public Utility Societies 127 Demonstration Steel Houses 17 Government Steel Houses 2,552 Total 109,179 * Of this number 42 are reconstructed houses. As regards the estimated number of new houses still required for the purpose of housing the working class population of Scotland, I would refer my hon. Friend to the statistics contained on page 1 of the Annual Report of the Department of Health for Scotland for the year 1929 showing an estimated shortage of 100,000 houses as at the 31st December last.
