HC Deb 23 January 1930 vol 234 c351W
Viscount WOLMER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs which commercial treaties would be violated if a lower excise duty were charged upon beer manufactured entirely with British barley and hops?

Mr. W. GRAHAM

I have been asked to answer this question. Provisions which would prevent discrimination in the matter of excise duties in favour of beer brewed from British barley and hops are to be found in our treaties with the following countries: Austria, Estonia, Finland, France (including Algeria), Germany, Greece, Honduras, Hungary, Japan, Latvia, Portugal, Siam, Spain and Yugoslavia. A number of other countries could claim equality of treatment with these by virtue of treaty clauses which give them the right to most-favoured-nation treatment.
