§ Sir J. BIRCHALLasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the new tariff of 60 per cent. imposed by Australia on clothing hitherto imported from Leeds will stifle the trade, thereby causing further unemployment; and can he make representations with a view to its modification?
§ Mr. W. GRAHAMI am fully alive to the serious effects on employment in this country of the recent increases in the Australian import duties on apparel and other commodities. As I have explained in answer to previous questions, general representations on the subject have been made to the Commonwealth Government and, in addition, a more detailed memorandum has been forwarded to that Government for their consideration.
