Number of persons in receipt of—
Institutional Relief (including casuals, but excluding lunatics in county and borough asylums). Domiciliary Relief (excluding persons in receipt of domiciliary medical relief only). Total.

The total number of pensions payable in England and Wales under or by virtue of the Contributory Pensions Act, 1925, at the end of 1929 was as follows:

Widows' pensions 249,524
Orphans' pensions 13,452
Old age pensions to persons 65 to 70 years of age 511,461
Old age pensions to persons over 70 years of age 363,600
Total 1,138,037
