HC Deb 04 February 1930 vol 234 c1690W
Mr. AYLES

asked the Secretary of State for War the number of privately-owned motor vehicles that are subsidised by the War Office, the purpose of such subsidies and the total amount of money so spent?

Mr. SHAW

The scheme provides for subsidising 1,000 vehicles at £40 a year each, and, as shown on pages 134 and 135 of Army Estimates for the current year, a sum of £40,000 is included in the Army Estimates for the subsidies; the actual number of vehicles enrolled is at the moment 989. The vehicles are available to be purchased by the Department in emergency, and the object of the scheme is to save the heavy expenditure which would otherwise be necessary in providing, storing and maintaining a reserve of such vehicles as War Department property.
