HC Deb 04 February 1930 vol 234 cc1703-4W
Mr. MACLEAN

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the Danish Government has given to a union of Danish exporting firms a subsidy of 15,000 kr. for the purpose of collective participation at the Leipzig Fair; and whether he is prepared to consider giving similar assistance to any group of British export firms for the same purpose?

Mr. W. GRAHAM

Yes, Sir. I am informed that the Danish Government have made a small grant of 40 per cent. of the expenses of exhibiting at Leipzig to an association of Jutland manufacturers on condition that non-members of the association can also participate. Some 70 firms will exhibit. The grant is not to exceed 15,000 kroner, say some £800. As regards the second part of the question, it is not at present considered necessary to arrange for Government assistance to British exhibitors at the Leipzig Fair. In this connection I would add that I have appointed a Committee under the chairmanship of Lord Chelmsford to report upon the possibilities of improving the British Industries Fair, and I will draw the attention of the Committee to the point now raised.
