HC Deb 12 November 1929 vol 231 cc1741-2W
Duchess of ATHOLL

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will state the number of schools with not more than 30 and 20 scholars, respectively, on the roll in each year since 1919–20?

Mr. ADAMSON

The available statistics of the Scottish Education Department do not enable a full answer to be given to the question and I hope the Noble Lady will accept as sufficient the following figures which have been specially compiled for the purpose. In 1920–21 there were 306 schools with not more than 20 scholars on the roll and 253 with more than 20 and not more than 30. In 1927–28 the corresponding figures were 426 and 274 respectively.

Duchess of ATHOLL

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the number of grant-aided schools in Scotland in which there are less than two classes for children of from 12 to 14 years of age; and how many of these are one-teacher schools and two-teacher schools, respectively?

Mr. ADAMSON

The latest figures available show that on 31st March, 1928, there were 687 one-teacher schools, 695 two-teacher schools and 355 three-teacher schools in Scotland. It may be assumed that in these schools the pupils between the ages of 12 and 14 are taught by one teacher. Included in the above figures are 202 schools not attended by pupils over the age of 13.
