HC Deb 12 November 1929 vol 231 cc1743-4W
Mr. O. BALDWIN

asked the Minister of Labour whether she will consider the desirability of providing return fares to men who have completed their training at the Dudley training centre, as many of them now have to walk long distances to their homes?

Miss BONDFIELD

Men admitted to a Government training centre at a distance from their homes receive a free railway warrant to the centre, and, on completion of training, a free railway warrant either to their homes or to a place where employment has been found for them or is in prospect. Men for whom employment has not been found before their training is completed are occasionally invited to remain in the vicinity of the centre for a few days until work can be found for them; but if work is not then available, a warrant is issued to enable them to return home. If my hon. Friend is aware of any cases in which this procedure has apparently not been followed and will let me have particulars I will gladly have inquiries made.
