HC Deb 11 November 1929 vol 231 cc1540-1W
Mr. LLEWELLYN-JONES

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in making grants to local authorities in connection with the repair and maintenance of existing roads and in connection with the construction of new roads, he will consider the advisability of attaching a condition that there shall be constructed and maintained suitable footpaths so as to ensure the protection of pedestrians?

Mr. HERBERT MORRISON

It is the practice of my Department to require the provision of footpaths in conection with schemes of road improvement and new construction, where such provision is desirable and practicable. The cost of construction of the footpath is included in the cost of the work on which the grant from the Road Fund is based, and in the case of roads, such as Class I and Class II roads, towards which maintenance grants are made from the Road Fund the maintenance of the footpath ranks also for grant.
