HC Deb 08 November 1929 vol 231 c1411W
Sir R. ASKE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what work in warship and engine building has been suspended or cancelled by the Admiralty since last May; and what number of shipbuilders and engineers have been paid off in consequence?

Mr. AMMON

Work has been stopped on the Submarine Depot Ship "Maidstone," the Submarines "Rupert" and "Royalist" and the Cruisers "Surrey" and "Northumberland." I am unable to state what number of shipbuilders and engineers have been paid off in consequence, but as none of the orders were far advanced, the number could not be very great. The total numbers employed in the Royal Dockyards have not been reduced owing to special arrangements made by the Admiralty.
