HC Deb 07 November 1929 vol 231 c1286W
Sir J. LAMB

asked the President of the Board of Trade what was the total amount of wheat received for milling purposes in this country during each of the last five years from the last convenient date?

Mr. W. R. SMITH

During the five crop years ended 31st August last, the imports of wheat into, and the estimated quantities produced in, the United Kingdom, after deducting exports, were as follow:

Imports less re-exports. Estimated home production less exports).
Year. Million cwts. Million cwts.
1924–5 102.7 28.3
1925–6 99.8 28.3
1926–7 106.3 27.3
1927–8 104.4 29.9
1928–9 103.6 26.7

It is understood that, subject to a small deduction for impurities, practically the whole of the imported wheat is used for milling purposes, and that, on the aver age, about two-thirds of the home crop is also milled.
