HC Deb 07 November 1929 vol 231 cc1299-300W
Mr. KELLY

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether any representation has been made by the fishing industry at Yarmouth and Lowestoft as to the difficulty they are faced with owing to the great quantity of fish now landed; and whether any effort is made by his Department to assist the curers in developing the European market, particularly that of Russia, in order to prevent the unemployment which is threatened?

Mr. BUXTON

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. Until quite recently the amount of herrings landed at Yarmouth and Lowestoft has been considerably less than in the corresponding period of last year, and, although larger supplies are now forth coming, I am satisfied that no difficulty has so far been encountered in dealing with them. With reference to the second part of the question, I am anxious to avail myself of any opportunity that may present itself of assisting this important industry.
