HC Deb 05 November 1929 vol 231 cc871-2W
Mr. STEPHEN

asked the Home Secretary if he is aware that at Marlborough Street Police Court, on 16th July, 1929, a prosecution instituted by the police against two cyclists was dismissed by the magistrate, Mr. Cancellor: that it was admitted in one of the cases that the matter should not have been even considered; and that the individual concerned, through loss of wages and costs of defence, was involved in a loss of several pounds; and whether he will consider what steps can be taken to arrange for the compensation of individuals in such cases?

Mr. CLYNES

I have made inquiries. I am informed that no such admission was made. The magistrate who dismissed the cases made no comment. He refused the request of defendants' solicitor that they should be allowed costs, and the case affords no basis for netting up special arrangements for compensating such defendants.
