HC Deb 05 November 1929 vol 231 cc856-7W
Mr. CHATER

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is taking steps to enable auxiliary postmen to work sufficient hours to enable them to receive a living wage?

Mr. LEES-SMITH

The conditions of employment of auxiliary postmen are under my consideration, but I am not at present in a position to make any statement.

Captain CROOKSHANK

asked the Postmaster-General if he can state the normal length of time that an ex-Service auxiliary postman who desires to be taken on to the regular establishment has to wait after putting in his first application to his Employment Exchange?

Mr. LEES-SMITH

The period of waiting varies within wide limits according to the man's category as an ex-Service man, the number of ex-Service men already on the Registration Authority's list and the local vacancy rate, and for this reason I regret it is impracticable to give an average. If the hon. Member will give me particulars of any case he has in mind I shall be glad to make inquiry about it.
