HC Deb 04 November 1929 vol 231 c644W
Lord E. PERCY

asked the President of the Board of Education how many classes in public elementary schools contained more than 50 children on the register on 31st March, 1929, and on the same date in each year since 1924, inclusive, distinguishing classes for children over and under 11, respectively?

Sir C. TREVELYAN

The following statement shows the classes in public elementary schools, maintained by local education authorities in England and Wales, containing more than 50 pupils on the registers:

know their exact position at the earliest possible date in connection with the raising of the school age next year; and whether, in these circumstances, he proposes to expedite the Government statement on the subject and to make the official announcement before Christmas?

Sir C. TREVELYAN

The hon. Member will remember that the Government have announced their intention to raise the school-leaving age in April, 1931. With regard to the introduction of the Bill, I must refer him to the statement on this subject which was made by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer on Tuesday last.
