HC Deb 14 March 1929 vol 226 cc1287-8W
Mr. KELLY

asked the President of the Board of Trade the amount in this country of single cotton yarn on hand and produced in 1926, 1927 and 1928, respectively, and how much of this was exported?

Mr. H. WILLIAMS

I am unable to state the stocks and production of cotton yarn in these years, but it is estimated from figures published by the International Cotton Federation that the mill consumption of cotton in Great Britain was as follows:

Mill consumption of cotton in Great Britain.
Year. Million lbs.
Year ended 1st January, 1927 1,410
Year ended 1st January, 1928 1,560
Year ended 1st January, 1929 1,420

The quantities of cotton yarns of United Kingdom manufacture exported as yarns from the United Kingdom during the last three calendar years were:

Exports of cotton yarn.
Year. Million lbs.
1926 169
1927 200
1928 169
