§ Mr. HERBERT MORRISONI have under consideration a very large number of schemes in respect of which applications for grants have been made. These schemes are in various stages of preparation and for many of them no estimates of cost have yet been submitted. I am therefore unable to answer the hon. Member's question in precise terms. Grants from the Road Fund are available on the terms set out in the circular which I caused to be issued to all the larger highway authorities on 9th July. I see no reason why there should be any delay in putting in hand useful schemes which highway authorities have in readiness, provided that they are prepared to contribute towards the cost in accordance with the terms of the circular.
