§ Mr. GILLETTasked the Postmaster-General whether the vacant land in Margaret Street, Finsbury, purchased some years ago for Post Office purposes, is now required; and, if not, whether, in view of the overcrowded condition of the people living in Finsbury, he will be prepared to consider the sale of the land to the Finsbury Borough Council if it so desires?
§ Sir W. MITCHELL-THOMSONThis site was purchased some years ago when the General Post Office East site was sold to provide alternative accommodation for headquarters staff partially housed in rented premises. For financial reasons it has been impracticable to commence building operations; and furthermore the property is partly occupied by weekly tenants who would have to be dispossessed before the site could be fully developed. The possibility of its disposal has recently been the subject of a communication from the Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury, and the matter is now under investigation.
