HC Deb 30 January 1929 vol 224 c968W
Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what is the rate of pay of extra men of the Customs and Excise at the seaports; and what is the usual number of hours they work in a week?

Mr. SAMUEL

Extra ram employed in the Customs and Excise Department within the London Postal Area are paid at the rate of 8s. 4d. a day—this rate covers cost of living bonus. Extra men employed at the ports outside that area are paid from 3s. to 4s. a day with the addition of cost of living bonus which varies from 2s. to 2s. 8d. a day. These rates cover an average daily attendance of eight hours. Overtime is payable for any excess attendance. Extra men are not regular employés but are specially engaged from time to time to meet a glut of work. In these circumstances, there are no usual weekly hours worked.
