HC Deb 04 February 1929 vol 224 c1421W
Mr. T. GRIFFITHS

asked the Under Secretary of State for India whether it is proposed to extend the term of the present Indian Legislative Assembly and provincial councils in view of the proposal made at the time of the appointment of the Simon Commission that the Indian committees appointed to cooperate with the Simon Commission should be represented when the proposals arising out of the Commission's Report come before a Joint Committee of both Houses of Parliament?

Earl WINTERTON

The question of extending the term of the present Indian Legislatures is under consideration for more than one reason, but I should make it clear that the Indian Legislative delegations or representatives whom, as His Majesty's Government hope, the Joint Parliamentary Committee may invite to confer when the Statutory Commission has reported, need not be identical with the committees now sitting in conference with the Commission.
